            Current and Past Projects

Meteorological Evaluation Services plays an active role in air quality and meteorological projects and activities in both the private and public sectors.

Meteorological Evaluation Services has conducted hundreds of projects on behalf of our utility, industrial and government clients over the years. Because of confidentiality restrictions, we cannot provide specific details of these projects. Projects include:

  • Air quality dispersion modeling assessments, including PSD and emission offset

  • Air permit preparation, including Title V, Synthetic Minor and New Source Review

  • Meteorological data monitoring and processing for industrial sources

  • Aerial surveys of natural draft cooling tower plumes. One study resulted in numerous peer reviewed papers including an article in Science magazine

  • Supervision of Good Engineering Practice (GEP) stack determinations in complex terrain through wind tunnel modeling

  • Assessing the environmental issues involved in retrofitting coal-fired power plants with scrubbers

  • Analyzing the meteorological data which is contrasted with natural draft cooling tower performance and the relationship with the thermal discharge to a river

  • Collaborating in a joint research field study on natural draft cooling tower plumes with Electricité de France in the Midwest

  • Multiple control room habitability dispersion analyses for nuclear power plants

  • Preparation of extensive report for venture capitalists on weather conditions compared to the climatology of the Mid Atlantic, Upper Midwest, South Central and San Francisco Bay areas of the country

  • Completion of study on the probability of the probable maximum hurricane (PMH) striking a particular areas on the East Coast of the United States.  MES quantified the probability of worst case tidal flooding due to a probable maximum hurricane at a coastal location.

  • Aerial surveys of the coverage of sea ice in the Middle Atlantic States during the cold 1970’s on the East Coast.

  • Compiled the United States Department of Agriculture, Agriculture Research Service's USDA Plant Hardiness Zone map published as Miscellaneous Publication Number 1475 in 1990. • Compiled the Plant Heat Zone Map for the American Horticultural Society (AHS) that appeared in newspapers and journals, including USA TODAY on August 21, 1997 and in the September/October 1997 issue of The American Gardener. • Drafted an update of the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map that was published in May/June 2003 issue of The American Gardener.

  • Assembled data sets for agricultural interests that relate three- and five-digit ZIP codes to the USDA Plant Hardiness Zones and the AHS Plant Heat Zones

  • Prepared conference symposium papers for publication for the American Meteorological Society

  • Developed a climatology of Long Island, New York for a utility with emphasis on the frequency and persistence of extreme temperatures, freezing rain and ice storms

  • Technical report critiques and proposals for federal and state rules and third party documents

  • Compiled actual past weather data, forecasts, and determined the extreme event recurrence intervals for precipitation

  • Analysis of past weather data, forecasts, and public advisories to reconstruct the weather conditions and information publicly available concerning a weather-related incident, such as a building failure or auto accident.  Communication of our findings and, if requested, preparation of written affidavits, reports and court testimony. Clients range from Fortune 500 companies to private individuals from coast to coast.
